I've tried symlinks locally and it doesn't appear to work. It does look like a 
news/ folder is required beneath each language:
en/news/
fr/news/
nl/news/
pl_PT/news/

(that works locally but it may not be the ideal solution.)

Not my favourite solution either.

I meant to hint that there was some organisational difference in the directory 
tree between the svn and Linas' server. Maybe en/ is actually a symlink and 
the en/ files are in the Document Root? Linas?

It's only news/ that is not working, the rest appears OK.
