Graham, it's fair to interpret Derek's response as evidence that someone attempting this task won't have as much assistance from the current devs. That's the reality of limited resources. However, it's a big inductive leap to also interpret this as "stating that nobody else sees the value of a previously suggested feature ... [and] that at least one key contributor is likely to block development efforts in that direction." That's simply incorrect. I understand that short responses leave some ambiguity. But, many times, if Derek didn't respond to emails of this type, it could sit around unanswered for days, weeeks, or forever. Please rest assured that patches will receive more concrete responses. The GnuCash developers are very open to new developers, especially ones that will address the many simplifications the codebase currently needs, but even developers with a vision for new features, so long as they don't expect a great deal of assistance. Introducing a new feature into GnuCash is a lot of work, but it can be accomplished with great deal of persistence and initiative.
