I like option 3.

The implemented auto-save doesn't behave in the conventional way (with a
separate "checkpoint" file); it probably should before being enabled by
default.

Regardless, some will still want the feature, especially since we have an
alternate mechanism for creating checkpoint files that could be used in the
case of an undesirable autosave.
