The gnucash developer working on the backend has tested more with sqlite than with mysql.
I've tried a couple runs with sqlite. I had some self-inflicted problems, but once those were cleared up I also ran into at least painfully slow response times and possibly a bug or two. I have to try a couple other things to make sure I haven't shot myself in the other foot.
