FYI, the "errors from the gnome server" turned out to be a bug in Chromium (serves me right for using a browser still in beta): the gnucash.trace file was not readable by my main account, having been written from my test account with permissions set to 600. Chromium sat there spinning until something timed out. When I tried it with Firefox on a hunch, I got an explicit error message about the permission problem. Attachments have been uploaded.
