After considering the two replies I've gotten about this, I've decided to file it as an enhancement request (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=622644 ) and focus my efforts on getting 2.4 out, instead. Sadly, it looks like fixing this aspect of check printing isn't as simple or self-contained as I'd hoped.
