Steve,

You apparently didn't read my reply very carefully:

Cannot find ICU means that you're trying to build master, which has some new 
dependencies, ICU, Boost, Googletest, and Googlemock.
  apt-get install boost-all-dev google-mock
will also install icu-dev and Googletest
.
Since it seems to be a great effort for you to even work a build system, I've 
got a question for you. How much programming experience in what languages and 
what platforms do you have?
