But such a translator could be written in awk (with a tabular text
file), Scheme (with a Scheme special form file) or Perl (with just
about anything.  Methinks those tools are rather more well-known than
XSLT.

I hodl XML in much the same light as Java: not perhaps a bad idea in
and of itself, but the implementation is ugly and the hype
intolerable.
