Where did you build gnucash?
This sounds like make install didn't work right...
For me:
~> file /opt/gnucash/bin/gnucash
/opt/gnucash/bin/gnucash: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1,
dynamically linked, not stripped
