So this is a problem either with the Debian gnucash packages or even with Debian itself. On SuSE (which I'm running) and RedHat with self-compiled packages everything seems to be fine. How did you install your gnucash package? If you haven't compiled it yourself, please try to do so now. This happened with self-compiled gnucash. If there are pre-compiled packages, I'll try them happily.
Ok, my question was whether you compiled it yourself (because otherwise the error might come from a specific binary package). But since you did, the error has to be somewhere in the interaction between gnucash and the compile process on Debian.
Oh, I was wrong -- the installed message catalog is called 'gnucash.mo' (no g in there) but in the locale-specific directory. If you called configure with --prefix=/usr/local, then it should be in /usr/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/gnucash.mo . In other prefixes accordingly. Could you check whether it is there? You can then copy gnucash's po/de.gmo file to that location and check whether the amount of translation changed. If that fixes it, then something in the po/Makefile is broken, probably because of some gettext version problems. Could you then send that Makefile to gnucash-devel?Gnucash comes with a 100% German translation. So if you have LANG=de_DE, *all* messages should be in German. If they are not, something in your installation is broken. For example, the current translation file de.gmo might have been installed in a non-default location while an old translation file de.gmo still hangs around in some default location. There is no de.gmo file indeed. Neither in /usr/local (where I installed gnucash currently) nor in /usr (where I had 1.6.x installed a long time ago.). I even didn't found a de.gmo file in just downloaded file gnucash-1.7.8-1.i386.rpm. The only de.gmo exists in /po/ subdirectory in the gnucash sources. Should I copy this file somewhere under /usr/local/share/... ?
