The first patch was against CVS ca. Saturday 7pm. The second cleaned-up
patch was against CVS ca. Sunday 5pm... [all times Pacific].
The second version of the patch is now in CVS, causing no end of annoyance
to people who compile with warnings-as-errors flags; it will be cleaned
up soon.

Feels like 1.8, though given enough work it might make 1.6.x...
