Note that this doesn’t guarantee that you won’t have duplicates. If what it thinks is the last number used is less than one that you may have manually generated, you could get a duplicate. One possible way of avoiding it is to have the autonumbering start at (say) 1000 (assuming you never used one that high) or to use a prefix as mentioned in a previous response.
