I presume you are using an sql based storage format ?
John fixed a bug in that backend yesterday that would indeed cause gnucash to 
exit.
You could try today's nightly build.

There was also a discussion on IRC yesterday revealing the credit note issue 
is fixed for new credit notes, but there may still be issues with already 
created bad credit notes.

I will look at this as soon as I have some free time available.
