Gareth, Windows does not show the file extensions in File Explorer unless you change a setting in your Windows preferences. Most of the experienced Windows users, A.K.A. 'Old Fogies' (like me) change that setting early on and forget that some people may not be familiar with it.
The extension .log is a part of the file name but your File Explorer is configured (by default) to hide the suffices because they might confuse you, which they did, so which way is actually more confusing? The Linux world is more sane.
