You might try the sqlite backend, that at least avoids the heavier XML autosaves. After making sure the needed sqlite3 libraries are installed, it's a simple save-as (and don't forget to specify in the now present dropdown menu what format you want).
If you're willing to tinker in python some day, it also gives you access to that.
