Given that it applies only to the current register, that's what I would
expect.

I'm not sure what is meant by this.

I open a register (any register). The date of the blank txn at the
bottom of the register window is highlighted.

I click on "View" and then hover the mouse cursor on "Double Line" in the
"View" dropdown. The text I quoted appears in what I gather is called the
"status" bar, at the bottom of the application window. The same place
that shows the contents of the field the cursor is in: the date, in this
case, or (say) the Transfer field, if I click on that in some random txn.
Also where the text ("tooltip"?) for other entries in the "View" dropdown
shows up.

When I then clicked on "Double line" just now, the txns all expanded to
two-line view, and the cursor jumped to the "Description" field of the
txn at the top of the account window. From here if I click on "View"
again, I see "Double Line" checked. If I click on it again the txns go
back to single-line but the cursor stays on the same txn (rather than
going back to the blank one).

If instead I click on some random txn, the cursor appears to stay in the
chosen part of the chosen txn regardless of switching between double and
single line.

This is all on 2.6.21.

Does this help?

I have no idea how to do that. I have no idea why I might want to.
