Don, The main concern with upgrading are that changes in the file formats and sometimes file locations occur with the major version changes. It is generally not possible to go from 2.6.3 to the current version 4.2 directly. The recommended approach is usually to upgrade initially to one of the V3 versions first. The major version up grades usually have a procedure inbuilt to make any datafile adjustments from the previous major versions which are invoked the first time you run the upgraded version. From 2.6 to v3.x the location of some of the user preference files was also changed. These changes with the major upgrades are detailed in https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Location. there is also information on the file locatinos in https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-guide/basics-migrate-settings.html. Once you have upgraded and opened yout data file. You will also find information in the archives of this mailing list if you look up upgrade 2.6 to 3. If you have any custom reports you may need to ensure they are copied from the v2.6 locations to the V3.x locations as these did change.
Once you have the upgrade to 3 completed run the Action->Check and Repair to check out the datafile and repair any problems. The upgrade from a 3.x version to 4.2 version is done in a similar manner to the above. If you check posts in the archives around and witihin the first few weeks after the new version release dates you will generally find any posts covering problems and fixes. V3.11 is available from the downloads page https://www.gnucash.org/download.phtml as is 4.2 after you have completed the 3.11 upgrade. The windows installer generally does an unload of any previous version before installing the upgraded version.
