Hello good folks, Having used GNC for many years the time has come to create a new data file along with associated accounts. Before doing so i wanted to reacquaint myself with the basic principals behind GNC operation, basically because i would like to simplify my data entry.
Firstly, is it necessary to create accounts under each heading such as 'expense' 'credit card', 'bank account' and so on? My thoughts are yes if you intend to run balance sheet or cash flow reports, in my situation I export accounts individually into HTML then excel or similar My reasoning is to reduce the number of keystrokes or scrolling when entering data, for example typing in a petrol receipt currently requires expense:car:petrol to be selected in drop down, it would be far easier to hit the shortcut key for petrol if petrol were a main and not sub account (if that makes any sense?) To summarise, my main objective using GNC is very basic double entry book keeping to ensure cash ends up where it's sent and duplicate entries are not made, for any report I use excel.
