The last possibility is that a "Payment" into a credit card account that has a zero balance will produce an "Overdraft" of credit, i.e. a credit balance in that liability account, which will show as negative if, as Derek suggested, the setting for reverse balanced accounts is "Credit", which, I think, is the default. When you use the credit card to make a purchase the balance will go positive. Welcome to GnuCash.
