Thank you, yes do believe this is the case - window somehow disappears on selection. However, also frequently use Windows+Tab without and this without any luck.

The possibility suggested by another user that the focus has been 'hijacked' by a window that is out of view is real. One way to detect that is to press the Windows key and see what appears.
