FOLLOW-UP: I switched to GnuCash 5.5 and yes this DOES seem to be related
to the already-fixed Bug# 799152
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=799152

It DOES work properly in GnuCash 5.5, and presumably will also work in the
next release.
