Raspberry PI can handle USB drives no problem -- get an externally powered one, possibly hardware raid type one . You can load up NTFS package for it and share it out as CIFS which would be equivalent of a NAS box.

I have a tablet style display for it, and a USB drive to connect to it. I need to fire it up and see if it can power a traditional USB drive. I also have an SSD drive, but don't really trust that for long term use as a backup. Alternatively, I could just buy a NAS. I want to get away from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for sensitive files.
