What makes you think you're doing anything wrong - the button is called "Show Splits" ? Where are you expecting to find a "Split" button - perhaps you're reading section 2.7 of the Tutorial and Concepts Guide, copy below, which shows an old example screenshot with the button labelled simply "Split" ??
