LOL, back in my working days, one of those really had the programmers stumped. And I only immediately saw WHAT went wrong because  intimately familiar with what sequence of machine code instructions to expect from a COBOL statement. Saw "hey, using a logical compare -- now why did the compiler do THAT?" (arithmetic compare intended). From there not all that long to find the field redefinition and have the programmer switch to the numeric field name vs the alphameric  field name.
