Hi Sherlock,

Thanks for that link. I had tried various Internet searches to find if this problem had previously been reported; but I was never able to find anything relevant. Like I said, I'm pretty new to GnuCash.

I'll be sure to search https://bugs.gnucash.org in the future if I come across anything else that looks like a problem. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Tom

Hi all,

I'm a new user to GnuCash and this mailing list; but I think I found a bug in the program regarding the Import of QIF Files.  I hope this is the proper place to report it.  Anyway, here's the issue.

The QIF file of interest was exported from Quicken 2016 Home & Business.   Among the many exported Quicken accounts there are several Brokerage accounts.  And in some of those Brokerage accounts there are a few transactions that Quicken refers to as Reminder Transactions. It seems that the GnuCash Import process can't handle QIF files that include such Reminder Transactions.

This is what happens.  I'll select that QIF file to import it. And everything appears to start out just fine.  It loads normally.  And I'm able to go thru all the normal prompts for accounts and stock holdings, matching QIF and GnuCash accounts, Income and Expense categories, etc. When it gets to the QIF Import step, I'll start the Import process; and it also starts out just fine.  But then midway thru that Import process (maybe 60% across the progress bar) GnuCash just crashes and closes without any warning.  There's no error message or pop-up window to indicate what went wrong.  The GnuCash program just completely closes altogether without any indication of why or what happened.

To be clear, I'm not reporting this here because I need any help. I've already found a solution for my own needs.  I fixed it by going back into Quicken and removing those Reminder Transactions from the Brokerage accounts.  After removing them I re-exported all the accounts to an updated QIF file.  And that updated QIF file (without the offending Reminder Transactions) can now be imported into GnuCash just fine.  What I want to do here is to let the right folks know about this issue; since it causes GnuCash to crash and close completely without any warning. That seems like kind of a user- unfriendly way of handling an Import error.

Anyway, if you want any additional details about this just let me know. I'm happy to help.  FYI, I confirmed this problem with the latest GnuCash v5.12 on Windows 11 Home v24H2.

Tom
