The issue was indeed the setting of "Number of transactions" is set to "0". I have no clue how I managed to change it from "0". And to think I almost reinstalled my operating system because of it! Make sure on the offending machine that Preferences > Register Defaults > "Number of transactions" is set to "0". This turns off the visible transaction limit. Any other number will result in only showing that many transactions.
