I think I see the issue. In the Basic Ledger view you may only see "--
Split Transaction--" in every transaction that has more than one split,
which could be nearly every transaction in some cases. This is also the
only view where the column title "Transfer" is used. If all split lines
containing more than about 24 characters are hidden, then the default
column width will shrink to that 24 character width if the column is
adjusted while in the Basic Ledger view. Then, when you return to the Auto
Split Ledger view or Transaction Journal view, it will not automatically
expand to the previously selected width for that view, and it will seem to
be too narrow.
I think it has always behaved that way, but I, for one, never noticed
because I don't use the Basic Ledger view myself.
The simple solution is to put the register in Auto Split Ledger view or
Transaction Journal view when you adjust the column widths.
If it concerns you enough, you could create an enhancement bug report to
assign a separate set of column width settings for each of the three
register views. I doubt that it would be implemented in my lifetime, but
you never know.

One more detail, column sizing by moving the vertical bar always works on
the column to the left of the vertical bar. Never vice versa.
