No assurances but unlikely unless updating from one major verion to another, i.e 4.x -> 5.y. File format changes when they occur are generally at the major version updates. If you are going from 5.x_-> 5.y, there are unlikely to be any problems. The location of user preference files and stored reports etc has changed at times.
Keep a separate backup copy of the data files and the config files when updating for safety and you can always recover. Config file locations are given in the wiki (https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations).
