What version of GnuCash on what OS?
I just tested this and it works fine with v5.14 on MacOS.
Can you provide a screenshot of exactly where you clicked?
You can type in a date.
You can click the drop-down to get a calendar, but you cannot select the
year or type over it, you have to use the toggle arrows on either side
of it.
If your accounting period is Jan 1 to Dec 31, you can also use the
'relative' dates of "Start/End of Previous/Current Year" instead of
absolute dates.

100% of the time in my previous experience, any rapid iteration of
something like that was due solely to having something pressing on my
keyboard.

I was trying to change the opening date in my income statement from 2025 to
2026. I clicked on the calendar, then the 5 to change it, and the year
started incrementing and kept going until I cancelled the option. GnuCash
then exited, which I didn't expect. At this time of the year I have
changed from 2025 to 2026 and back again several times in the income
statement and balance sheet. Is this behaviour likely to happen again?
