I didn't "make the case that coverage of basis cost is incomplete in the guide". I made the point that the approach provided for entering a return of capital has a few shortcomings with regard to lot management and income tracking.

As to whether or not the basis costs are adequately discussed in the guide, I suggest reviewing the section on Selling Shares: https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v5/C/gnucash-guide/invest-sell1.html

My understanding is GnuCash's lot management support was added late and, with regard to capital gains of securities, doesn't play well with a few of the approaches described in the guide.
