There is some SQL at

test/ac_tree_w_sx.sql at main · Wm-X/test <https://github.com/Wm-X/test/blob/main/ac_tree_w_sx.sql>

that may help.  It produces an account tree and LEFT JOINs the scheduled transactions, it is quite wide so best viewed in a spreadsheet.

I too appear to have some orphaned SX accounts though I only have one Template Root.  I'm just leaving them be for now.

Kalpesh,

Fair question. Since my situation only includes 45 of these entries, the load
is minimal. The bug outlines a hierarchy that is 500+ entries deep, so it's
clear it could have become more significant.

Mine is more of an academic interest: what are these things, and why do they
exist?

I think I've gotten some explanations that satisfy that curiosity. I probably
won't dig further into the innards to clear them out. It's enough to know that
some are likely related to scheduled transactions, and some are related to that
bug.

Best,

Flip side of the question is in that what is the harm in keeping them around?
While it introduces some confusion but is there any additional ones?

They do, under a root account called template_root. And there’s an old
bug,https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=569735, about GnuCash creating a
series of template root accounts. Since David has been around a while I guess
they’re left overs from that. Note Mike Alexander’s comment 1 about his fix for
them. If all of your current SXes were created after that then you can safely
remove the old ones. Simon Arlott attached to the bug a python script to clean
up the excess root accounts in an XML file, though it might need some work
unless you happen to have a Python2 installation handy.

Interesting.
Do you have any scheduled transactions? I feel like those sit in a
separate hierarchy.

Hello,

I'm a longtime user (21 years) currently using gc5.13 on Windows 11.

For a number of reasons, I was poking around in my stored data, and I
discovered that my data file has 46 different root accounts. [For the
record, I saved my xml file as sqlite and was looking at the data
through a Db reader]

One is clearly the "right" one, as it has Root Account in the name column.
Other real accounts point to it.

The other 45 root accounts have no name entries; moreover, they form
a single hierarchy, with the ID of n being the parent_ID for n+1.

I am confused by this, and wonder how in the world I ended up with these.
The accounts don't show up in the main application; I only see them
when I view the underlying SQL database.

Can I/should I delete these?
