Ciao Gabriele, GNU Go 3.8 is indeed the latest version of GNU Go.
There are other, more recent, better go playing programs that use the same communication protocol as GNU Go. For instance Pachi, at http://pachi.or.cz . I was sure such programs could be used with your settings but I looked and didn't find any terminal interface to the GTP protocol used by all go playing engines. It seems like something is missing here. As an aside IGS, the Internet Go Server ( https://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/sintro1.html ) also has a terminal interface: you can use telnet to connect to this server. I haven't used IGS for a very long time, I don't know what kind of playing experience one can get there these days. Your message is a good reminder to care about accessibility which, I'm ashamed to acknowledge, we often neglect in our own apps.
