It *is* possible but, no, not recommended. However, if
someone turned up and said "Hey, I stored a whole bunch of
data in a v1 database already." I'd feel committed to
deliver a full upgrade script when v2 comes out.

No, the caching is done in RAM, I believe.

The Debian version on the Knoppix CD works.
