Thanks! It turns out it isn't an authentication problem. Psycopg 2.0.5 cannot handle the cp1252 encoding which is the default German encoding on Windows XP. You might want to try setting the option "encoding" to "UTF8" in the config file under the group [profile GNUmed database on Windows].
