In case anyone is interested, Mac OS includes
curl
because its license is BSD but does not include
wget
whose license is GPL. A Mac user therefore built wget for the Mac and
makes it available for download (as .zip file) for installation from
the command line here:

He built it for Panther (10.3) but it runs on my Intel MacBook
running Tiger (10.4).
I used mkdir to create the directories suggested in the readme but
perhaps did not need to.
