I agree that modality is undesirable almost everywhere. Modality was introduced as a convenience (for developers, not users) early in Gnumeric's life before Jody was lead maintainer. Removing the modality is apparently somewhat hard and isn't currently high on anyone's priority list (compared to e.g. better charts, pivot tables etc.) Of course it might be relatively simple to fix just this specific case.
