You don't have to uninstall the old version. Since Gnumeric puts its version number in the file path, by default, you could have multiple versions installed side-by-side.
If you install from deb/rpm packages, the old version is probably uninstalled as part of the process. If not, it would probably be prudent to uninstall the old version first. Searching for 1.4.2 should give you a good idea if you already installed 1.4.3.
