ok... after changing enlightenment's keybinding for zoom from ALT+ENTER to
SHIFT+ALT+ENTER and restarting enlightenment, enlightenment was behaving
as expected, but gnumeric was interpreting ALT+ENTER the same as just
ENTER.
i logged out of enlightenment, restarted it, and now everything is happy.
