spreadsheet file is missing changes

Last night I updated a spreadsheet (race_cars.gnumeric) and saved it as a gnumeric XML file. Today, when I opened the file my changes/updates were lost and I got an error message "internal error". I added additional sheets the file. Is there a way I can recover this file?
