We have had a report that old gtk+ libraries installed on the system can cause this. This Gnumeric build has been compiled against 2.10, I'm told.
Try running Gnumeric from the command line. It might produce some output there that could help us track the cause. Also, any kind of error log or stack trace that you could get your hands at might be helpful.
