The problem with gnome-print was that it was unmaintained and buggy. Gtk+ has a setting, gtk-print-preview-command, as to which external preview command to use. It defaults to evince, but I don't see any reason that acroread couldn't be used, although a small wrapper script to handle options might be needed.
