I don't see this with gnumeric from the slitaz package reporsitory - the "status" bar is separate from the "sheet" bar and I can see all the sheets!!
I was earlier using gnumeric from lubuntu 10.10. I switched from lubuntu to slitaz and now am overjoyed to see this problem go away.
