In case anyone does not have access to the paper, they conclude that Gnumeric is still accuracy champ, a position it has held for at least eight years, but that with Excel 2010 Microsoft are starting to draw close. The accuracy benchmarks they use have four or five tests in which Gnumeric lags R. Perhaps these might be clues to some simple improvements that could be made? I could try to find out some detail on these tests if that would be helpful. I imagine the authors would be happy to help as well, they seem like fans.
