About screen space occupancy, this is probably related to the gtk3 theme
in use on your machine. Can you post a screenshot?
I removed all personal configuration files $HOME/.* of the previous
openSUSE version (11.4). Now the gnumeric window looks normal.
Some warnings are still there:
