got it working-I had renamed the default theme default-slack so that it was backed up and then used default-slack as the theme to use in ~/.gnump3drc. That seemed like the right way to do it...but it obviously wasn't. I renamed the theme directory of default to default-orig and renamed default-slack to default (still backed up, just different names). Then in /.gnump3drc I assigned the theme as default. Now it appears all the time. Strange-but now I know.
