I tried this again (after 2 years!) and I think I got it. This appears to work, and I'd appreciate it if others would try and let me know their results:
"downsample_medium_wma = mplayer -quiet -ao pcm -ao pcm:file=- -vo null -vc null $FILENAME | oggenc -Q -b 64 -" Of course, you could replace the pipe into oggenc with a pipe into lame if you want.
