Naming a file containing hashes CHECKSUMS would not be a good idea, since a hash is not the same as a checksum. I think sha1sums, sha256sums, sha384sums etc. would be a better option. Does any important applications (i.e. Free Software) make use of the .md5 or .sha1 extensions?
