Thanks for the links; I found them interesting. Alas, none of those messages contain any suggestions for how one might recover data from the (corrupted?) encrypted file. That's my primary concern at the moment. Also the workaround described in the September posts was shown to possibly not work in the October posts and no resolution was discussed. Am I to conclude that gpg simply can't reliably encrypt multi-gigabyte files on Win32?
