you could try using stdin and stdout. For example:
gpg --decrypt < file.asc
(or pipe that into your favorite non-caching pager, e.g. /usr/bin/less)
gpg --encrypt --armor -r $recipient
(then type your message, and end with a ctrl-D after the last newline)
