To the question "are you trying to decrypt multiple e-mails at once" the answer is yes. I had the ability to set how long the passphrase was loaded - "GPA" with Ubuntu but it seems not available with Mint Linux - am discovering there's a lot I can't change with Mint Linux! Oh well .......... I tried some specific gpg2 settings in my gpg.conf - but all produced errors - which is why I asked the question when Linux first runs - it starts a number of scripts one of which must be by default launch gpg 1.4.11 and not gpg2.
